Hi, I am new to the board and to Texas and as I begin to settle into the state I thought it prudent to try and rack the brains of some avid local bassers so I hit the water prepared. That being said, any advice you guys can give me concerning effective lures, however generic or specific I would appreciate it. For example, favorite crankbaits, brands, sizes, colors, diving depths, etc. Soft plastics that are effective for you, spinnerbait colors and blades, jigs, on and on. I plan on doing some serious stocking up and want to spend my money wisely as I make my fishing tackle collection more "southern friendly". Thanks for all your help,
Luke

Luke over the years of fishing I have become a firm believer of the KISS theory.... Keep It Simple Stupid
Dont let all the hype get to you......Much of the industry is made to catch fisherman more than it is to catch fish.
This is my honest tips and many might differ; Spinnerbaits - if the water is off color go with chartreuse/white if its clear then get as life like as possible because the fish will get a great look at it. This goes pretty much with cranks as well. If its muddy get some bright colors and "match the hatch". As far as plastics or jigs go I keep it very simple. If the water is off color then go with something dark (black/blue, bluefleck etc). If it is rather clear then go with a watermelon, watermelon red or watermelon gold.
This should get you cranked up........Come by the boat show and Ill hook you up with some of Lake Fork Tackles newest plastics.

Blake hit the nail on the head. I'm no expert, but natural colors work best for me. I typically use them in stained or clear water. I downsize line and bait size in clear water. I love to throw the shakey head and crankbaits I usually use a lipless crankbait and a Carolina rig as search baits and throw a shakey head when they are tight lipped. Typically I fish these colors: Plastics - Watermelon, Green Pumpkin, Red shad Cranks - Shad or Bluegill colored (mostly shad) Spinnerbaits - Chartruese and white with gold blades Jigs - Crawfish colors, Peanut butter and jelly, Black and Blue Swimbaits - Tennessee Shad Brands, just based on personal preference-usually consider quality for the price...I'm too cheap to throw Lucky Craft ;D: Plastics-Zoom, Yum, Tiki, Lake Fork, Grande Bass Crankbaits-Rapala DT or Bomber; Bandits to downsize-depth based on conditions Lipless-Strike King red eye or the old Bill Lewis standby Spinnerbaits-Terminator Jigs-Booyah, Strike King, Eakins for finesse Jig heads-Spot remover Swimbaits-Yum Money Minnow Buzzbaits-Can I get a Booyah? Frogs-Ribbit Buy all of that and can still get skunked on any given day

Thanks a bunch guys. I'm going to hit the bait shops today for one last splurge before packing up and heading out. If things go according to plan I will be in Texas within a week and hopefully stop by the boat show to meet you bshiff (I'll be the guy without a tan ). Hope to meet both of you and some other chumps soon, take care. Luke

I will add...One of the good things about guys in this club...We each still want catch more and bigger than everybody else, but we want everybody to catch a limit. Everybody is willing to help someone else out. You just have to be willing to listen and learn.
